Does Crystal Healing Really Work? In her book, "Anatomy of the Spirit", medical intuitive Carolyn Myss PH.D. describes the body’s energetic system and how emotional imbalances can affect the flow of energy, leading to a number of physical, psychological and emotional illnesses. Myss describes the body’s energetic system in terms of chakras (or in the language of Kabbalistic Jewish mysticism, Sefirot). Chakras and sefirot are essentially based upon the same principles of energetic flow throughout the human body. In the chakra system, there are seven chakras that run through the body from head to toe along the body’s central column. These chakras correspond with different colors and different emotional and health issues. In the Kabbalistic system, there are 10 sefirot that roughly correspond with the chakras. Emotional, mental and physical issues can cause blockages in different chakras that disturb the flow of energy throughout the body, leading to disease. Likewise, blockages in the body’s energy system based in a physical mechanism can lead to emotional and psychological problems. It can become a circular system that leads to a downward spiral of disease and psychological or emotional pain. Myss isn’t the first to make the correlation between energy flow, emotions and physical health. Many traditions of alternative health care – some of them ancient – also acknowledge how disrupted energy (or chi) flow throughout the body can stem from emotional issues and lead to physical, emotional and psychological disease. Many such forms of healing such as traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, Reiki, and even chiropractic care all aim to remove energy blockages in order to restore chi flow throughout the body. Some traditions go beyond health into our environment. Feng Shui, for instance, deals with creating an environment that successfully directs the flow of chi throughout living and working spaces in order to induce inner and outer harmony. Crystal healing takes energy medicine a step further by attempting to balance energy blockages through the specific vibrational energy of certain materials (most often crystals, but sometimes metals and other materials as well). In crystal healing, the healing material is placed on or near the body in the area that corresponds to the specific chakra or energy that is blocked. Similarly, color therapy uses the vibration of different colors to remove energy blockages. With so many different modalities focusing on balancing and maintaining the energy flow throughout the body and our environment, one wonders if there is a scientific basis that supports these modalities. When looking at our universe from a quantum perspective, it appears that the answer just may be yes. On our very smallest levels, human beings – and everything in our universe – are really just tiny bits of vibrating energy surrounded by large areas of empty space. As a matter of fact, vibration is what causes the formation of matter. Case in point: If you place several grains of sand on a plate and make the plate vibrate, the individual particles of sand will form and reform into different shapes and patterns depending on the frequency of vibration being applied to the plate. So it is with everything you see and experience in this universe – including your body, your thoughts and your emotions. Different thoughts and emotions have different vibrational frequencies. Negative thoughts and emotions can cause disequilibrium. How? Every time you think or feel something, those thoughts and emotions resonate a frequency around you that causes other things to begin to vibrate at the same frequency. Much like the sand on the plate, these vibrations can lead to physical changes in your body as the vibration causes your subatomic particles to reform in new ways that match the vibrations given off by your emotions. The stronger the thought or feeling, the stronger the vibration and the more that matter (in this case, your body) is affected by the vibration. The human body is a delicately balanced system. In order to maintain optimal physical, mental and emotional health, your body needs to maintain its optimum operating frequency – or be able to quickly return itself to stasis after an event that changes its vibration. The longer a body is out of balance, and the longer the flow of energy is disrupted, the more severe the disease and the more difficult it becomes to restore balance and energetic flow. Crystals and other special materials are believed to vibrate at frequencies that can restore your body’s vibration to its optimal state. Since different frequencies in the crystals vibrate at frequencies that correspond with the different vibrational frequencies of your emotions, they can be used to restore stasis, counterbalance negative emotion, or bring about a desired emotion. For instance, jade is believed to have a vibrational frequency that is the same vibrational frequency your body reaches when you are in a state of relaxation. Therefore, using jade during times of stress may help to counterbalance the stressful emotions give off. Likewise, rose quartz, which vibrates at the same frequency as your body during states of emotional balance, can be used to restore balance during times of extreme emotionalism. Our bodies are very complex; however, like everything else in nature, they are designed to be in balance and operate efficiently. The laws of entropy, however, work at odds with this stasis. What is entropy? It is a law of thermodynamics that states that, in an isolated system, the degree of disorder is always increasing. Fortunately, the human body is not an isolated system. We can introduce elements into this system (our bodies) that counteract the disorder (decay) that is a natural part of entropy. By using materials – such as food, medication and even crystals - to balance vibrational energy, it is possible to bring your body back into balance and prevent the cycle of emotional, physical and mental disorder that leads to emotional pain and physical disease.   |
