The Rock

By Beryl Comar

I read a story about a guy who had bought a house with a big rock in the back yard. When he asked the estate agent why the rock was there he was told that it had been there since the house was built. It had been left because being so big it would have been to expensive to remove it, so each previous owner had merely gardened around it.

Years went by and the guy lived with the rock in his back yard, until one day he decided that he wanted to build a swimming pool. However that rock was where he wanted his pool to be.

He couldn't afford to get professionals in to remove the rock so he decided to do it himself. He rounded up all his friends and asked them to help him with the rock, he would provide the food and drinks and they would provide the labour.

A lot of his friends agreed to help, so one Saturday they got stuck in. First they decided to dig around the rock to see how deep it was and to get an idea of how big it really was. Well, hardly had they got started when they discovered that this rock was only about 10cm deep in the ground. This great big rock was merely the top of a rock that had been blasted by the builders and then left there. Getting rid of it was not nearly as difficult as had been imagined.

We all have "rocks" to deal with. Problems that seem insurmountable. Situations that seem beyond our capability to resolve. What is the "rock" in your life? To deal with it you have to understand a few principles:

1. It won't move itself.

2. The longer you leave it the more "permanent" it becomes.

3. The longer you "fear" it the bigger it gets.

4. You'll put up with it until you decide to do something different.

5. When you stand up to your problems suddenly they don't seem so big.

6. You must believe you can before you will attempt.

7. You must believe it's worth it before you will persist.

8. It is better to have tried and not succeeded than to have failed to try.

9. The REAL problem wasn't the problem. The IMAGINED problem was the problem.

10. When you investigate the situation and get accurate information you can make better decisions.

(Author unknown but I really appreciate this story)
